On Tuesday, November 6, the Honor Guard provided military honors for former U.S. Army Veteran, Tom Gregory. These honors were conducted at Elton Black Funeral Home. Participating were Lance Oberg, Ron Nevorski, Skip Davison, Joe Bishop, Chuck Bowman, John Moore and Don Stevenson.

John commanded the Firing Team, and Don was the Bugler.

On Monday, November 5, the Honor Guard provided graveside military honors for former U.S. Army Veteran, Louis Caswell. These honors were conducted at Milford’s Oak Grove Cemetery. Participating were Lance Oberg, Ray Chaplin, Ron Nevorski, Skip Davison, Bob Godwin, Percy Duncan, Joe Bishop, Chuck Bowman, Dennis Finkbeiner, Nortie Caswell, and Don Stevenson.

Lance commanded the Firing Team,.

Joe Salvia, John Moore, and Lance Oberg conducted a silent watch Sunday evening at Lynch Funeral Home.

 

 
Norman Harwood
 

 

The Legion Honor Guard provided complete military honors for US Navy veteran and Post 216 member Norman Harwood. The ceremony was conducted on October 29, 2007 at Nusach Harie cemetery in Ferndale MI.

The flag folding team consisted of Joe Salvia, Skip Davison, and John Moore. The firing team was commanded by Rich Chowaniec and the other team members participating were John Moore, Joe Bishop, and Dave Horst.

On Monday October 23rd the Legion Honors Team conducted military interment honors for U.S. Army veteran Allen Watros at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Team members participating were Skip Davison, Ray Clinard, Chuck Bowman, Lance Oberg, Joe Bishop, Don Stevenson, and Rich Chowaniec

 

 
Ralph M. Coleman
 
 

On Monday October 22nd a second Legion Honor Guard was formed to provide military burial honors for U.S. Army and WWII veteran Ralph M. Coleman. The service was held at the Highland cemetery with the following Legion members participating. Commander John Nelson, John Moore, Joe Salvia, John Robinson, Nortie Caswell, Al Riggs, Dave Horst, Percy Duncan, and Ron Nevorski.

A silent vigil was held at Lynch Funeral home the evening of October 21st. Participating were Joe Saliva, John Moore, and John Robinson.

On Saturday October 13th, the Legion Honor Guard provided a Firing Team and Bugler for the memorial service of US Army Veteran Ralph M. Peck. The ceremony was held at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Milford. The Honor Guard participants were Don Stevenson, Lance Oberg, Percy Duncan, Ron Nevorski, Bob Godwin, John Robinson, Nortie Caswell, and Rich Chowaniec.

On Monday October 8th, the Legion Honor Guard provided a firing team for the interment services of US Navy Veteran Edward J. Connelly at Milford Memorial Cemetery. Participants included John Moore, Rich Chowaniec, Ron Nevorski, Dave Horst, Don Stevenson, Chuck Bowman, Skip Davison, Lance Oberg, and Joe Bishop. Rich commanded the firing team and Don was the bugler.

Navy Veteran
 
 

At the request of Ray Berry, the Past Commander of the American Legion Post in Farmington, the Post Honor Guard provided Burial Honors for a U.S. Navy Veteran on August 25th. The ceremony was held in Farmington at the St. Fabian Church. Our Post provided the firing team and bugler.

Those participating were Rich Chowaniec, Joe Salvia, Percy Duncan, Chuck Bowman, Don Stevenson, Ron Nevorski, and Bob Godwin. Rich commanded the firing team, and Don was the Bugler.

On Monday August 20th, the Legion Honors Team conducted interment services for U.S. Army veteran, Spc4 Robert Tyrell at Milford’s Oak Grove Cemetery. The team participants were, John Moore, Rich Chowaniec, Ron Nevorski, Dennis Finkbeiner, Lance Oberg, Percy Ducncan, and Joe Bishop.

Don Stevenson was the Bugler

On Sunday evening, Joe Salvia, John Moore, and Lance Oberg stood Silent Watch during visitation at the Lynch Walled Lake Chapel.

On Thursday, August 16th, the Honor Guard provided graveside military honors for former U.S. Army Veteran, PFC Robert O. Case. These honors were conducted at Milford’s Oak Grove Cemetery. Participating were Lance Oberg, John Moore, Nortie Caswell, Rich Chowaniec, Ray Chaplin, and Don Stevenson.

Lance commanded the Firing Team, and Don was the Bugler.

Joe Salvia and Lance Oberg conducted a silent watch Wednesday evening at Lynch Funeral Home.

On Monday August 13th, the Honor Guard provided military honors for U.S. Army and WWII veteran James W. Lange at a private cemetery in White Lake Twp. James was a past Commander of VFW Post 9914, a GM retiree, and volunteer at the Veterans hospitals.

Participating for the Honor Guard were:

John Moore, Nortie Caswell, Rich Chowaniec, Lance Oberg, Skip Davison, Ray Clinard, Dave Horst, Joe Bishop, Chuck Bowman, Don Stevenson, and John Robinson.

Rich commanded the Firing Team and Don was the Bugler. An active duty military honors team conducted the flag ceremony.

On Saturday June 30th, the Post Honor Guard provided full military honors for US Navy Veteran Dexter A. Maxwell at Milford Memorial Cemetery. Lance Oberg coordinated this event as well as commanding the firing team. The firing team consisted of Ron Nevorski, Ray Clinard, Joe Bishop, Chuck Bowman, and Dave Horst.

The Flag Presentation Team consisted of John Moore, John Nelson, and Skip Davison. The Bugler was Don Stevenson.

The Legion Honor team provided memorial services for form U.S. Navy Pilot Nathan A. (Jim) Crawford on June 9, 2007. The service was held at White Lake Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Deborah Kerr officiating. U.S. Navy active duty personnel conducted the flag presentation ceremony. The Legion Firing team included, John Moore, Skip Davison, Rich Chowaniec, Gerry Mantela, Dave Horst, and Ray Clinard. The Bugler was Don Stevenson.

 

 
Lester Shelters
 
Special Memorial Honors on Tuesday, May 22 at 10:00 a.m.

NOTE: At the last membership meeting Linda Dagenhart who represents Milford’s Oak Grove Cemetery requested that one of the Legion burial plots be made available for placement of a head stone honoring WWII Veteran Lester J. Shelters. The membership approved her request.

BACKGROUND

USAAF SSGT. Lester J. Shelters was shot down over Japan during WWII, was captured and executed. His remains were never recovered. Russell Shelters, his nephew and other family members will be present at the dedication. Russell Shelters will receive the flag.

Joe Salvia commanded the flag folding ceremony, with assistance from Lance Oberg, John Moore, and Todd Herron. Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing team, including the colors, and Bugler. The following team members participated:

Robert W. Openshaw
 
Special Memorial Honors at Oak Grove Cemetery for WWII Veteran, Robert W. Openshaw on Tuesday, May 22 at 10:45 a.m.

BACKGROUND

USAAF SGT Robert W. Openshaw was a waist gunner on a B17 during the China defensive and offensive. He was highly decorated and died in Florida in 1984. However his ashes were lost and never returned to the family. SSGT Openshaw’s son lives in Milford and he, his wife and their two sons will be present at the dedication. The son will receive the flag. I believe the clergy will be present at this ceremony.

Joe Salvia commanded the flag folding ceremony, with assistance from Lance Oberg, John Moore, and Todd Herron Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing team, colors, and Bugler. The following team members participated:

The Legion Honor Guard rendered Interment services for US Army Veteran Aloysius “Al” Miotke on May 15, 2007. Mr. Miotke was buried at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church cemetery in Milford. Rich Chowaniec commanded the Firing Team that consisted of John Moore, Percy Duncan, Chuck Bowman, Skip Davison, Ron Nevorski, and Ray Clinard. The Bugler was Don Stevenson. Murray Burley carried the Legion colors. The American POW/MIA, and Army branch colors were posted.

Ronald B. Punches
 
 

The Legion Honors team along with members of Huron Valley AmVets Post 2006 provided a rifle team and bugler for former US Air Force Veteran, Ronald Punches on March 21, 2007 at Brighton MI. Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing team, which consisted of John Moore, Ray Clinard, Skip Davison, Chuck Bowman, Dennis Finkbeiner, and Joe Bishop. The flag bearer was Nortie Caswell and the bugler was Don Stevenson.

 

 

 

Ronald B. Punches a resident of Milford for over forty years, died at his home of cardiac arrest on March 17, 2007. He was 70 years old. Born on September 14th, 1936, the son of Donald & Vesta (Pike) Punches, Ron grew up in Howard City where he was a 1955 graduate of Howard City High School. Following high school he served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and when he returned home he attended Western Michigan University. It was at Western that he met Kathy Lahrke. They fell in love and were married on June 26, 1965. They made their home in Milford where Ron worked as a computer programming technician in the Safety Lab at the G.M. Proving Grounds for over thirty-six years. He retired in 2001. Ron was very dedicated to his God and his church, Cornerstone Presbyterian in Brighton. He served as a Deacon, spent Monday’s at the church helping with anything that needed to be done or anything that needed to be fixed, enjoyed the Wednesday Bible Study group, and gave his time for mission work, which included trips to assist Samaritan Purse in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was also a charter member of the Huron Valley AmVets Post 2006. All of his other energies he gave to his family. He was a wonderful husband and father, and was adored by his grandchildren, with whom he spent as much time as he could. He’d often manage to take the entire group of them to places such as the movie theater or even a day on the golf course. Ron also enjoyed singing & playing the saxophone, snowskiing, and any opportunity he could get to fly in a plane. He is survived by Kathy, his beloved wife of over 40 years; daughter, Deborah (Jeff) Pousho of Brighton; sons, Brian (Brenda) Punches of Highland, Dr. Gregory (Sharon) Punches of Clarkston; grandchildren, Justin, Austin and Julia Pousho, Gabrielle, Nathan, Joshua, Caleb and Noah Punches; sister, Phyllis (Wendell) Clark; brother, James (Beverly) Punches and many loving extended family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert (Nancy Punches Mason) Punches. A Funeral Service will be held at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 9455 Hilton Rd, Brighton, Wednesday, March 21, Eleven O’clock, with The Rev. Dr. Richard Alberta officiating. Douglas Cameron Stone
 
 

Sergeant First Class Douglas Cameron Stone died March 11, 2007 in Iraq. Sfc. Stone was a graduate of Milford High School and the son of Delores Feigley, and the Stepson of Post 216 member Merlin Feigley. Post members Bob Godwin and John Moore, along with many community friends and neighbors attended Sfc. Stone’s funeral and burial services in Petoskey MI on March 20. A fifteen-person detail from Sfc. Stone’s home base in Salt Lake City Utah flew in to conduct the ceremony.

 

 

 
Robert (Bob) Gibson
 
 

On March 6, 2007 the Legion Honors Team provided full military honors for long time Milford/Highland resident and US Army Veteran Bob Gibson at the West Highland Baptist Church in Highland Michigan. Corporal Gibson was a highly decorated US Army Korean War Veteran. He spent a lifetime helping civic groups and individuals in this area.

Joe Salvia, John Moore, and Percy Duncan performed the flag ceremony and former USMC and Korean Veteran Bob Godwin commanded the rifle team. The rifle team consisted of Ron Nevorski, Chuck Bowman, Dennis Finkbeiner, John Robinson and Joe Bishop.

John “Stan” McGea , age 91 of Highland, February 17, 2007. Loving father of Ruth Ann (Joseph) Repshas, Eileen (Thom) Boze, Donna (Steve) Payne, Michael (Kathy) McGeary, Daniel (Sheryl) McGeary, Maureen McGeary, & Timothy McGeary. He also leaves his 16 grandchildren & 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia (Steve) Fuller, former spouse, Lorraine McGeary, and sisters, Kathleen Frankhart and Maureen Hock. Funeral from Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 N. Louis Gombasy
 
 

Members of the Milford American Legion provide the facilities and the Honor Guard for the funeral of WWII Navy Veteran Louis Gombasy on January 30. Several Post members and local business leaders had provided Mr. Gombasy and his family with assistance with home repairs and other support services during the past two years.

Former Navy Veteran Skip Davison commanded the Firing Team that consisted of Rich Chowaniec, Ron Nevorski, Bob Godwin, Ray Clinard, Chuck Bowman, Al Riggs, Joe Bishop, and Don Stevenson (Bugler).

Commander Joe Salvia coordinated the funeral service with the family and Lynch and Son funeral Home in Walled Lake.

Louis Gombasy passed away Thursday, January 18, 2007 at the age of 85. He was born October 7, 1919 in Detroit, Michigan. He was often around his grandparent’s farm that is now I-96/Novi Rd. interchanges. Attending Cass Tech High School in Detroit. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1940 and was at Pearl Harbor on December 7th where for his actions during and after the attack, he was awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart. Remaining on active duty for the duration, he took part in 5 major Pacific campaigns and met his wife – Rosalynn Earnhart. Discharged in 1946, he returned to the area first to Walled Lake then moving the home to its current Clark St. location. Louis was active in many aspects of his children’s and grandson’s life volunteering from Teen Town to Boy Scout to Civil Air Patrol from which he retired from in 2005. As a member of the Pearl Harbor’s Survivors Association, he attended many and it’s various ship reunions. Louis is survived by his daughter and care giver – Linda Statezni also of Novi, Son – George Gombasy and 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren that all live in the Seattle area. Jack Blanton
 
On Wednesday January 17, 2007 the Legion Honors team provided support for the funeral of former UA Army Air Corps veteran Jack Blanton. Joe Salvia, John Moore, and Lance Oberg, stood silent watch and then were pallbearers along with Rich Chowaniec.

Burial services at Milford Memorial Cemetery consisted of two Air Force personnel conducting the flag presentation ceremony, Pastor Gregg Mayberry, and the Legion firing team. The firing team was commanded by Skip Davison and included, Percy Duncan, Al Riggs, Ray Clinard, Dave Horst, Chuck Bowman, and Joe Bishop.

 

Lance, Oberg Rich Chowaniec, John Moore, and Joe Salvia provide a Silent Vigil and are Pall Bearers at the Jack Blanton funeral.
 

 

 
James Goodale
 
 

On January 13, 2007 the Legion Honors team conducted a full military honors ceremony for US Army Korean War veteran James Goodale. The ceremony was held at the Post with over 100 family members present.

The flag presentation team consisted of Lance Oberg, Joe Salvia, John Moore, John Robinson, Bonnie Welbaum, and Todd Herron. John Nelson presented the flag to Mrs. Goodale.

The Firing Squad was commanded by Rich Chowaniec and consisted of Skip Davison, Joe Bishop, Bob Godwin, Chuck Bowman, Ron Nevorski, Don Stevenson, Ray Clinard, Dave Horst, and Eric Baker. Family friend Nelson Trent from Ohio also fired with the team.

Peter Day Spier
 
 

On Thursday January 11, 2007 a funeral service was held at the Post 216 Legion Hall for Peter Day Spier. Peter was a long time American Legion Member and Past Commander. He also held office at the District level. Peter served his country as a Petty Officer in the United States Coast Guard.

Peter Day Spier, age 59, of Commerce and Bonita Springs, FL, died January 8, 2007 after a battle with leukemia. He is survived by his step-brother, Jeffrey (Monica) Spier, step-sister, Nancy Spier, aunt, Kathleen E. Cherry of CT, cousins, Thomas & David Cherry and their spouses, his nieces, nephews, and many dear friends including his fellow veterans at the Milford American Legion and friends at his “office” at the Appeteaser. He worked with Michigan Bell throughout Wayne & Oakland Counties for over twenty-five years. A Memorial Service and Military Honors will be held at Milford American Legion Hall, 510 W. Commerce, Milford, Thursday, January 11, 2007, at 7PM. Friends may gather from 6:30PM until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Milford American Legion.
