Robert Kerszykowski

 

On December 21, the Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors for US Navy and Viet Nam Veteran Robert Kerszykowski. The ceremony was held at the Church of the Holy Spirit and coordinated by the Elton Black Funeral Home. Navy personnel conducted the flag presentation ceremony.

The Legion Honor Guard provided the firing team and bugler. The members participating were John, Moore, Lance Oberg, Ray Clinard, Ron Nevorski, and Chuck Bowman. Skip Davison commanded the firing team and Don Stevenson was the bugler.

 

Elias Deibis

 

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Monday November 27th for US Army Veteran Elias Deibis.

Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing team consisting of Ron Nevorski, Lance Oberg, Dennis Finkbeiner, Joe Bishop, and Ray Clinard. Don Stevenson was the bugler.

 

Claire Massengill

 

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Monday November 27th for US Army Veteran Claire Massengill.

Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing team consisting of Ron Nevorski, Lance Oberg, Dennis Finkbeiner, Joe Bishop, and Ray Clinard. Don Stevenson was the bugler.

 

Kelly Baker

 

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Monday November 27th for US Army Veteran Kelly Baker.

The firing team included Percy Duncan, Ray Chaplin, Dennis Finkbeiner, Joe Bishop, Ron Nevorski, Rich Chowaniec, and Ray Clinard. Don Stevenson was the Bugler.

 

Edward Domanski

The Post Honors Team provided complete burial honors for former WWII veteran Edward Domanski at the Clarkston cemetery on Saturday, November 25.

Joe Salvia, John Robinson, and Lance Oberg conducted the flag folding and presentation ceremony. Don Stevenson was the Bugler. Skip Davison commanded the firing team consisting of Rich Chowaniec, Al Riggs, Chuck Boman, Ron Nevorski, and Ray Clinard.

 

Howard Aula

Members of the Post Honors Team provided military honors for Korean War Veteran and Milford resident Howard Aula at Lynch Funeral Home on Thursday, November 16 2006. Joe Salvia, Lance Oberg, and John Moore conducted a silent watch, flag folding, and flag presentation ceremony for the family. The rifle team, commanded by Rich Chowaniec, and members Ron Nevorski, Bob Godwin, and Joe Bishop fired the volleys and played Taps. Mr. Aula was a former SSGT in the US Army and served in Korea.

 

Dennis 'Butch' Kennedy

The Post 216 Honors team, conducted Burial services for Dennis Kennedy 0n November 13, 2006 at the Highland cemetery. Lance Oberg commanded the firing team consisting of John Moore, Chuck Bowman, Ray Clinard, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, and Ron Nevorski. Don Stevenson was the bugler. The flag folding ceremony was conducted by a US Army Major and Sergeant from Kalamazoo.

Dennis 'Butch' Kennedy age 57, of White Lake, died November 9, 2006. Loving husband of Laurie. Dear father of Anita, Heather, Jody, Tammy, Heidi, Lacey, Ginger, Denny and Jalynn. Grandfather of 8. Special friend of Ed & Julie Dine. Also leaves many dear friends and loving family from Cornerstone Church. Preceded in death by his parents, Hugh & Janice Kennedy.

Mr. Kennedy, a disabled combat veteran, served in two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart on three occasions and a Bronze Star.

 

Charles Hinderliter

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Monday October 23rd for Marine Corps Veteran Charles Hinderliter.

Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing team consisting of Joe Salvia, Lance Oberg, Dennis Finkbeiner, Joe Bishop, and Ray Clinard. Don Stevenson was the bugler.

 

Joseph Randall

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Monday October 23rd for WWII Army Veteran Joseph Randall.

Joe Salvia commanded the firing team consisting of Lance Oberg, Rich Chowaniec, Dennis Finkbeiner, Joe Bishop, and Ray Clinard. Don Stevenson was the bugler.

 

Leroy Olson

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Monday October 23rd for U.S. Navy Veteran Neible Leroy Olson.

Lance Oberg commanded the firing team consisting of Joe Salvia, Rich Chowaniec, Dennis Finkbeiner, Joe Bishop, and Ray Clinard. Don Stevenson was the bugler.

 

Neible Rossi

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Monday October 23rd for WWII Army and Air Force Veteran Neible Rossi.

Joe Salvia commanded the firing team consisting of Lance Oberg, Rich Chowaniec, Dennis Finkbeiner, Joe Bishop, and Ray Clinard. Don Stevenson was the bugler.

 

Al M. Barnette

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Tuesday October 10 for WWII Army Veteran Al M. Barnette. Lance Oberg commanded the firing team consisting of John Moore, Rich Chowaniec, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, and Skip Davison. New Post member Chuck Bowman was the bugler.

The team was asked to stay and provided honors for a Navy veteran after the Barnette service.
Skip Davison commanded the Firing Team.

The previous evening, Joe Salvia, John Moore, and Lance Oberg stood Silent Vigil for Mr. Barnette at Lynch Funeral Home.

 

Justin Dale Peterson

 

USMC Captain Justin Peterson was killed in Iraq during a training mission. His Commanding Officer was Major Wade Foster from Milford. Through his family (King and Terry Foster) he asked that there be a good turnout at the funeral service by local area residents and veterans groups. He and members of his command could not attend the funeral because of on-going commitments in Iraq.

Post members attending the funeral service in Pontiac were Commander Salvia, John Moore, and Lance Oberg. Amvet member Jerry Mantela also attended with us.

Former Marine Corps Veterans Rich Chowaniec and Ron Nevorski attended the interment service at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. The Marine Corps Honor Guard requested that Rich and Ron help their team by providing security and control for the hundreds of people gathered.

 

Martin Tibbs

The Legion Honor Guard provided military burial honors for WWII Army Veteran Martin "Al" Tibbs at Oak Grove cemetery in Milford on October 2, 2006. Mr. Tibbs was the father of Legion members Norm and Marty Tibbs.

The members of the firing team included John Moore, Ray Clinard, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, Skip Davison, John Robinson, and Bob Godwin. Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing team and Dennis Finkbeiner carried the American Flag.

 

 

Phillip Sauls

On Monday September 25, the Post Honor Guard provided the Firing Team and Bugler for U.S. Army Veteran Phillips Sauls at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.

Lance Oberg commanded the firing team consisting of John Moore, Ray Clinard, Skip Davison, Joe Bishop, and Todd Herron. Don Stevenson was the Bugler.

 

Rex Steyskal

On Monday September 24, the Post Honor Guard provided the Firing Team and Bugler for U.S. Air Force Veteran Rex Steyskal at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.

Lance Oberg commanded the firing team consisting of John Moore, Ray Clinard, Skip Davison, Joe Bishop, and Todd Herron. Don Stevenson was the Bugler.

 

George Kource

On Monday September 24, the Post Honor Guard provided the Firing Team and Bugler for USMC Veteran George Korce at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.

Skip Davison commanded the firing team consisting of John Moore, Ray Clinard, Lance Oberg, Joe Bishop, and Todd Herron. Don Stevenson was the Bugler.

 

Maurice Reynolds

On Monday September 24, the Post Honor Guard provided the Firing Team and Bugler for USMC Veteran Maurice Reynolds at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.

Skip Davison commanded the firing team consisting of John Moore, Ray Clinard, Lance Oberg, Joe Bishop, and Todd Herron. Don Stevenson was the Bugler.

 

Joseph Ritok

On Monday September 24, the Post Honor Guard provided the Firing Team and Bugler for U.S. Army Veteran Joseph Ritok at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.

Lance Oberg commanded the firing team consisting of John Moore, Ray Clinard, Joe Bishop, and Todd Herron. Don Stevenson was the Bugler.

 

Frederick Straley

On Saturday September 23, the Post Honor Guard provided honor services for Army and Merchant Marine Veteran Frederick Straley. The services were held in Clarkston MI.

Our Honor Guard consisted of Joe Bishop, John Robinson, Todd Heron, Skip Davison, and Lance Oberg.

 

Henry Luker

On September 12, the Legion Honor Guard provided burials honors at the Great Lakes National Cemetery for:

US Navy Veteran Henry Luker

Our Honors Team provided the Firing Squad.

At the request of Lynch Funeral Home the Honor Guard provided a special burial ceremony at GLNC for Milford resident Henry Luker.

Honor Guard members included John Moore, Rich Chowaniec, Skip Davison, Don Stevenson, Jim Nevorski, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, Lance Oberg, and Al Riggs.

Skip Davison commanded the firing Team.

 

Donald Weber

On August 28, the Legion Honor Guard provided burials honors at the Great Lakes National Cemetery for:

Our Honors Team provided the Firing Squad and Bugler.

On August 3rd, the Legion Honor Guard provided burials honors at the Wixom Cemetary for:

U.S. Army and WWII Veteran Wesley J. Howes
Wesley Howes landed in Normandie and fought at the Battle of the Bulge.

Our Honors Team provided the Firing Squad.

Honor Guard members included John Moore, Al Riggs, Rich Chowaniec, Skip Davison, Ron Nevorski, and Don Stevenson.

Army personnel conducted the flag presentation ceremony, and Lance O'berg commanded the rifle team.

On July 24, the Legion Honor Guard provided burials honors at the Great Lakes National Cemetery for:

Glenn L. St. John,

The Post provided full burial honors for Highland resident and U.S. Navy Veteran Glenn L. St. John, on July 21 at the Highland cemetery.

Members of the U.S. Navy conducted the Flag folding and presentation. Al Riggs played taps. Skip Davison commanded the firing squad consisting of Honor Guard members Rich Chowaniec, Al Riggs, Ron Nevorski, Joe Salvia, and John Moore.

 

Corey Pelto

The Post provided full burial honors for U.S. M.C Veteran (Iraq) Corey Pelto on July 15 at Grace Countryside Church in White Lake. Corey was a Highland resident and 1999 graduate of Milford High School. He served 5 years in the U.S.M.C.

Joe Salvia, Bob Godwin, and Rich Chowaniec conducted the Flag folding and presentation. John Moore played taps. Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing squad consisting of Honor Guard members John Robinson, Joe Salvia, Ray Chaplin, Bob Godwin and a friend of the family who was a Viet Nam Veteran.

 

Lino Sacco

On July 17, the Legion Honor Guard provided burials honors at the Great Lakes National Cemetery for:

U.S. M.C. Veteran Lino Sacco

Our Honors Team provided the Firing Squad and Bugler.

On June 28, the Legion Honor Guard provided burials honors at Lynch Funeral Home in Milford for:

U.S. Navy and WWII Veteran Hubert R. McKerracher

On June 26, the Legion Honor Guard provided burials honors at the Great Lakes National Cemetery for:

U.S. Army Veteran Abraham Hodges

Our Honors Team provided the Firing Squad and Bugler.

Alex Kolasa

On June 26, the Legion Honor Guard provided burials honors for:

U.S. Army Cpl. Alex Kolasa who died as a result of an un-timely non combat role while serving in Iraq. The interment ceremony was held at Crescent Hill Cemetery in Waterford. Elton Black Funeral Home made the request.

Honor Guard members included John Moore, Joe Salvia, Lance Oberg, Ray Clinard, Skip Davison, Todd Herron, Joe Bishop, Al Riggs, and Don Stevenson.

John Moore and Joe Salvia conducted the ceremony and Don Stevenson was the Bugler. Lance Oberg commanded the firing squad.

George P. Woodsworth

On June 21, members of the Legion Honor Guard provided a firing squad for US Army Veteran (Korea) George P. Woodsworth at the Wixom Memorial Cemetery in Wixom MI. During the Korean War Cpl. Woodsworth served at Fort Myer, VA in the Third Infantry, “The President’s Own,” and was a bugler at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Flag folding and presentation was conducted by active duty military. Don Stevenson played taps. Skip Davison commanded the firing squad consisting of Honor Guard members John Robinson, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, Rich Chowaniec, and John Moore. Joe Salvia assisted the military detail.

 

Ernest Zechar

The Post provided full burial honors for Highland resident and U.S. Army Veteran (WWII) PFC Ernest Zechar on June 21 at the Highland cemetery.

Joe Salvia and John Moore conducted the Flag folding and presentation. Don Stevenson played taps. Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing squad consisting of Honor Guard members John Robinson, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, and Skip Davison.

 

 

 

Richard Perhogan

The Post Honor Guard provided burial honors for Marine Veteran Cpl. Richard Perhogan at the Novi Cemetery on June 15. Honor Guard members included Ron Nevorski, Joe Salvia, Skip Davison, Bob Godwin, Rich Chowaniec, Don Stevenson, Al Riggs, and Lance Oberg.

 

August "Ougie" Agostini

Members of the Legion Honor Guard provided a firing squad for US Navy and Army Veteran August "Ougie" Agostini at the Christian Memorial Cemetery in Rochester Hills MI. Ougie was a good friend Joe Salvia and his family and a log time community leader . Active duty Navy personnel provided the Funeral Honors including Taps, and the flag presentation ceremony.

The firing squad consisted of Rich Chowaniec, Joe Salvia, Ray Chaplin, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, Skip Davison, Al Riggs and Don Stevenson carried the U.S. Navy Branch Colors.

 

Michael B. Armstrong

On Friday June 2nd, the Post 216 Honor Guard rendered burial honors for U.S. Navy veteran Michael B. Armstrong at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI. Honor Guard members provided the flag folding, taps, and the rifle salute. Skip Davison and Don Stevenson conducted the flag presentation ceremony.

Post members participating were Ron Nevorski, Joe Salvia, Skip Davison, Al Riggs, Lance Oberg and Don Stevenson.

 

Elton Bakewell

On Monday May 22nd the Post 216 Honor Guard rendered burial honors for U.S. Navy veteran Elton Bakewell at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI. Honor Guard members provided taps and the rifle salute. A Navy Petty Officer, assisted by Skip Davison conducted the flag presentation ceremony.

Post members participating were Rich Chowaniec, John Moore, Joe Salvia, Skip Davison, Al Riggs, Ray Clinard, Lance Oberg and Don Stevenson.

 

Berte Randall

On Monday May 22nd the Post 216 Honor Guard rendered burial honors for U.S. Army veteran Brete Randall at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI. Honor Guard members provided taps and the rifle salute. A three person Army National Guard team provided the flag folding and flag presentation ceremony.

Post members participating were Rich Chowaniec, John Moore, Joe Salvia, Skip Davison, Al Riggs, Ray Clinard, Lance Oberg and Don Stevenson.

 

Robert Haskins

On Monday May 22nd the Post 216 Honor Guard rendered burial honors for U.S. Navy veteran Robert Haskins at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI. Honor Guard members provided taps and the rifle salute. A Navy Petty Officer, assisted by Skip Davison conducted the flag presentation ceremony.

Post members participating were Rich Chowaniec, John Moore, Joe Salvia, Skip Davison, Al Riggs, Ray Clinard, Lance Oberg and Don Stevenson.

 

Conston Smith

On Monday May 22nd the Post 216 Honor Guard rendered burial honors for U.S. Army veteran Conston Smith at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI. American Legion Post 216 conducted the complete burial honors for Mr. Smith, as the active duty MANG team was called away.

Post members participating were Rich Chowaniec, John Moore, Joe Salvia, Skip Davison, Al Riggs, Ray Clinard, Lance Oberg and Don Stevenson.

John Moore, Joe Salvia, and Skip Davison conducted the flag folding ceremony, and Don Stevenson provided taps.

 

William L'Heureux

On Monday May 22nd the Post 216 Honor Guard rendered burial honors for U.S. Army veteran William L'Heureux at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI. Honor Guard members provided taps and the rifle salute. A three person Army National Guard team provided the flag folding and flag presentation ceremony.

Post members participating were Rich Chowaniec, John Moore, Joe Salvia, Skip Davison, Al Riggs, Ray Clinard, Lance Oberg and Don Stevenson.

 

Everard A. Taylor

On April 30th and May 1st, members of the Legion Honor Guard participated in services for former WWII veteran and Purple Heart recipient T/Sgt. Everard A. Tayor. Joe Salvia, John Moore, and Lance Oberg stood a Silent Watch at Lynch Funeral Home in Milford on the evening of April 30th. Joe Salvia, Don Stevenson, Skip Davison, and 3 veterans of Sgt. Taylor's family provide the firing detail at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley. Post 216 had the honor of participating in the Purple Heart ceremony for Sgt Taylor in 2002.

 

 

William Winn

Burial services were held on April 24th for U.S. Army Veteran William Winn at the Great Lakes National Cemetary in Holly MI. Michigan Army National Guard personnel conducted the ceremony which included the flag folding presentation.

Burial services were held on April 24th for U.S. Navy Veteran John Matula at the Great Lakes National Cemetary in Holly MI. A Chief Petty Officer from thr Navy conducted the ceremony with the assistance of Post members, and former Navy Veterans, Skip Davison and Don Stevenson.

Members of the Legion Honor Guard provided a firing squad for U.S. Army Veteran Clinton Strand at Milford Memorial Cemetery. Michigan Army National Guard (MANG) personnel led by M/SGT Richter and his team conducted the flag presentation ceremony.

Rich Chowniec commanded the firing squad that consisted of Skip Davison, Percy Duncan, Ron Nevorski, Ray Clinard, and Todd Herron. John Moore was the bugler, and Commander Salvia assisted the Honors Team.

 

William (Bill) Manual

Members of the Legion Honor Guard provided a firing squad for WWII Army Veteran Bill Manual at the Ottawa Park Cemetery in Clarkston. Bill was a good friend Skip Davison and his family. Michigan Army National Guard (MANG) personnel from the Military Funeral Honors Team in Detroit conducted Taps, and the flag presentation ceremony.

Skip Davison commanded our firing squad that consisted of Rich Chowaniec, Percy Duncan, John Moore, and John Robinson. Bonne Welbaum carried the U.S. Army Branch Colors.

 

Richard James Slater

Burial services were held on March 26th for U.S. Army Veteran Cpl. Richard James Slater. The services were held held on Sunday March 26, 2006 at the Gramer Funeral Home, on 48271 Van Dyke in Shelby Township,MI.

Michigan Army National Guard personnel consisting of Capt. Linda Jordan, M/Sgt. Richter, SFC Don Campbell and their honors team conducted the ceremony which, included the flag folding ceremony and Taps.

Burial services were held on March 24th for U.S. Army Veteran Isabel Collins at the Church of the Holy Family in Novi, MI. Lt. Collins was in the Nurse Corps during WWII. Richter, SFC Don Campbell and their honors team conducted the ceremony which, included the flag folding ceremony and Taps.

The Post provided full burial honors for Highland resident and U.S. Navy Veteran Charles E. Needham on March 22nd at the West Highland cemetary.

The Flag folding and presentation was conducted by Skip Davison, Don Stevenson, John Moore and Rich Chowaniec. Taps was played by Murray Burley.

Alfred Peischl

Burial services were held on March 16th for U.S. Army Veteran Alfred Peischl at the Great Lakes National Cemetary in Holly MI. Sgt. Major Greg Russo and his team of four Michigan Army National Guard personnel conducted the ceremony which, included the flag folding ceremony and Taps.

Vincent Lamia

Former U.S. Army Sgt. Vincent Lamia passed away on January 29, 2006. Sgt. Lamia was a decorated WWII Combat Veteran and an American Legion member for over 30 years. Although he was not a member of this District or Post he was a personal friend of Commander Salvia who coordinated this burial service with the 1st District Commander Richard Chatman. Please see the attached thank you letter from Commander Chatman shown below.

The Post 216 Honor Guard consisted of Joe Salvia, Rich Chowaniec, Skip Davison, Al Riggs, and Ron Nevorski. Our Honor team provided the firing salute, taps, and the flag folding presentation.

 

 

Dennis E. Dougherty

Former U.S. Army Specialist Dennis Daugherty age 67, of Milford and formerly of Williamston, died January 25, 2006. Specialist Daugherty served with the 8th Infantry Division 7th Army during the Viet Nam era. Burial services were held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Milford.

A four member active duty Army team, commanded by MSGT Rector, conducted the flag presentation ceremony and provided taps. Post 216 members provided the firing detail and a color guard as part of the burial service.

The American, Army, POW/MIA, and Legion colors were carried by Nortie Caswell, John Moore, Percy Duncan, and Don Stevenson.

The Firing Detail commanded, by Rich Chowaniec, included Ray Clinard, John Robinson, Ron Nevorski, Lance Oberg, and Todd Herron.

Joe Salvia assisted the Ceremonial Team.

 

Michael Ascencio

U.S. Army Veteran Michael Ascencio age 64 of Saugatuck/Douglas, formerly of Highland, died January 16, 2006, and was interned at Great Lakes National Cemetary. Mr. Ascencio was a Viet Nam Veteran and a member of the Viet Veterans of American (VVA).

The Honor Guard team provided two flag bearers, and a six member rifle detail.
Joe Salvia assisted with the flag presentation. Members participating were Joe Salvia, Rich Chowaniec, Skip Davison, John Moore, Al Riggs, Ray Clinard, Ron Nervorski, Percy Duncan, and Don Stevenson.

 

Thank You Letter from the Ascencio Family

 

Henry J. Valliere

Henry J. Valliere age 78 of Westland, formerly of Hamburg Twp. & Milford, died Saturday, January 14, 2006. Burial was at Milford Memorial Cemetery.

Henry was a WWII Navy Veteran. Active duty Naval personnel conducted the graveside flag folding and Taps ceremonies. Post 216 provided the firing detail and two flag bearers. WWII Navy veterans Murray Burley and Don Stevenson held the National and Navy colors, and Ron Nevorski commanded the firing detail. The firing detail consisted of Joe Salvia, John Moore, Skip Davison, Lance Oberg, and Rich Chowaniec.

The family returned to the Post after the service for a luncheon in the upper hall.

 

Richard Henry "Dick" La Lone

Richard Henry "Dick" La Lone, a sixty year resident of Commerce Twp., died at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac on Tuesday January 10, 2005 after a brief battle with cancer. He was 84 years old. With the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and gave distinguished service in the European Theater. An Army Staff Sergeant whose 5 Battle Stars included one for the Invasion of Normandy, he worked with the French Resistance as a courier before the Liberation of Paris and was awarded the Croix De Guerre by Charles DeGall. He also participated in the liberation of the Mauthausen Concentration near Linz in Austria in May of 1945 Camp and was recognized by several Holocaust survivors groups for his courageous service. In later life, his extensive travels through Europe, where he revisited the site of the Battle of the Bulge and other conflicts gave him a sense of having been a part of history.

Full military honors were conducted on January 13th, in Commerce Michigan. The Military Honor Guard was conducted by a U.S. Army Colonel, and two senior NCO's. The Post Honor Guard included a seven member firing detail, and two flag bearers. The Firing Squad Commander was Rich Chowaniec.

 

Stephan Litt

On January 5th, Post 216 conducted a full burial service for WWII Army Air Corp Veteran Lt. Stephan Litt. The service was held at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. Post Chaplain Archie Noon officiated at the service. Joe Salvia, John Moore and Bonnie Welbaum conducted the flag presentation, and Skip Davison commanded the six member firing detail.

 

Salvatore Vella

On January 3rd, Post 216 provided a firing detail at the burial service of WWII Navy Veteran Salvatore Vella. The service was held at Milford Memorial Cemetery. Ron Nevorski commanded the firing detail.

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Monday November 27th for US Army Veteran Elias Deibis.

Howard Aula

Members of the Post Honors Team provided military honors for Korean War Veteran and Milford resident Howard Aula at Lynch Funeral Home on Thursday, November 16 2006. Joe Salvia, Lance Oberg, and John Moore conducted a silent watch, flag folding, and flag presentation ceremony for the family. The rifle team, commanded by Rich Chowaniec, and members Ron Nevorski, Bob Godwin, and Joe Bishop fired the volleys and played Taps. Mr. Aula was a former SSGT in the US Army and served in Korea.

 

Dennis 'Butch' Kennedy

The Post 216 Honors team, conducted Burial services for Dennis Kennedy 0n November 13, 2006 at the Highland cemetery. Lance Oberg commanded the firing team consisting of John Moore, Chuck Bowman, Ray Clinard, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, and Ron Nevorski. Don Stevenson was the bugler. The flag folding ceremony was conducted by a US Army Major and Sergeant from Kalamazoo.

Dennis 'Butch' Kennedy age 57, of White Lake, died November 9, 2006. Loving husband of Laurie. Dear father of Anita, Heather, Jody, Tammy, Heidi, Lacey, Ginger, Denny and Jalynn. Grandfather of 8. Special friend of Ed & Julie Dine. Also leaves many dear friends and loving family from Cornerstone Church. Preceded in death by his parents, Hugh & Janice Kennedy.

Mr. Kennedy, a disabled combat veteran, served in two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart on three occasions and a Bronze Star.

The Legion Honor Guard provided funeral honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery on Tuesday October 10 for WWII Army Veteran Al M. Barnette. Lance Oberg commanded the firing team consisting of John Moore, Rich Chowaniec, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, and Skip Davison. New Post member Chuck Bowman was the bugler.

The team was asked to stay and provided honors for a Navy veteran after the Barnette service.

Justin Dale Peterson

 

USMC Captain Justin Peterson was killed in Iraq during a training mission. His Commanding Officer was Major Wade Foster from Milford. Through his family (King and Terry Foster) he asked that there be a good turnout at the funeral service by local area residents and veterans groups. He and members of his command could not attend the funeral because of on-going commitments in Iraq.

Post members attending the funeral service in Pontiac were Commander Salvia, John Moore, and Lance Oberg. Amvet member Jerry Mantela also attended with us.

Former Marine Corps Veterans Rich Chowaniec and Ron Nevorski attended the interment service at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. The Marine Corps Honor Guard requested that Rich and Ron help their team by providing security and control for the hundreds of people gathered.

 

Martin Tibbs

The Legion Honor Guard provided military burial honors for WWII Army Veteran Martin "Al" Tibbs at Oak Grove cemetery in Milford on October 2, 2006. Mr. Tibbs was the father of Legion members Norm and Marty Tibbs.

The members of the firing team included John Moore, Ray Clinard, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, Skip Davison, John Robinson, and Bob Godwin. Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing team and Dennis Finkbeiner carried the American Flag.

Alex Kolasa
On June 26, the Legion Honor Guard provided burials honors for:

U.S. Army Cpl. Alex Kolasa who died as a result of an un-timely non combat role while serving in Iraq. The interment ceremony was held at Crescent Hill Cemetery in Waterford. Elton Black Funeral Home made the request.

Honor Guard members included John Moore, Joe Salvia, Lance Oberg, Ray Clinard, Skip Davison, Todd Herron, Joe Bishop, Al Riggs, and Don Stevenson.

John Moore and Joe Salvia conducted the ceremony and Don Stevenson was the Bugler. Lance Oberg commanded the firing squad.

George P. Woodsworth

On June 21, members of the Legion Honor Guard provided a firing squad for US Army Veteran (Korea) George P. Woodsworth at the Wixom Memorial Cemetery in Wixom MI. During the Korean War Cpl. Woodsworth served at Fort Myer, VA in the Third Infantry, “The President’s Own,” and was a bugler at Arlington National Cemetery.

The Flag folding and presentation was conducted by active duty military. Don Stevenson played taps. Skip Davison commanded the firing squad consisting of Honor Guard members John Robinson, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, Rich Chowaniec, and John Moore. Joe Salvia assisted the military detail.

 

Ernest Zechar
The Post provided full burial honors for Highland resident and U.S. Army Veteran (WWII) PFC Ernest Zechar on June 21 at the Highland cemetery.

Joe Salvia and John Moore conducted the Flag folding and presentation. Don Stevenson played taps. Rich Chowaniec commanded the firing squad consisting of Honor Guard members John Robinson, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, and Skip Davison.

The Post Honor Guard provided burial honors for Marine Veteran Cpl. Richard Perhogan at the Novi Cemetery on June 15. Honor Guard members included Ron Nevorski, Joe Salvia, Skip Davison, Bob Godwin, Rich Chowaniec, Don Stevenson, Al Riggs, and Lance Oberg.

 

August "Ougie" Agostini

Members of the Legion Honor Guard provided a firing squad for US Navy and Army Veteran August "Ougie" Agostini at the Christian Memorial Cemetery in Rochester Hills MI. Ougie was a good friend Joe Salvia and his family and a log time community leader . Active duty Navy personnel provided the Funeral Honors including Taps, and the flag presentation ceremony.

The firing squad consisted of Rich Chowaniec, Joe Salvia, Ray Chaplin, Ron Nevorski, Joe Bishop, Skip Davison, Al Riggs and Don Stevenson carried the U.S. Navy Branch Colors.

On Friday June 2nd, the Post 216 Honor Guard rendered burial honors for U.S. Navy veteran Michael B. Armstrong at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI. Honor Guard members provided the flag folding, taps, and the rifle salute. Skip Davison and Don Stevenson conducted the flag presentation ceremony.

On Monday May 22nd the Post 216 Honor Guard rendered burial honors for U.S. Army veteran Conston Smith at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI. American Legion Post 216 conducted the complete burial honors for Mr. Smith, as the active duty MANG team was called away.

On Monday May 22nd the Post 216 Honor Guard rendered burial honors for U.S. Army veteran William L'Heureux at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI. Everard A. Taylor

On April 30th and May 1st, members of the Legion Honor Guard participated in services for former WWII veteran and Purple Heart recipient T/Sgt. Everard A. Tayor. Joe Salvia, John Moore, and Lance Oberg stood a Silent Watch at Lynch Funeral Home in Milford on the evening of April 30th. Joe Salvia, Don Stevenson, Skip Davison, and 3 veterans of Sgt. Taylor's family provide the firing detail at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley. Post 216 had the honor of participating in the Purple Heart ceremony for Sgt Taylor in 2002.

Burial services were held on April 24th for U.S. Army Veteran William Winn at the Great Lakes National Cemetary in Holly MI. Michigan Army National Guard personnel conducted the ceremony which included the flag folding presentation.

Burial services were held on April 24th for U.S. Navy Veteran John Matula at the Great Lakes National Cemetary in Holly MI. A Chief Petty Officer from thr Navy conducted the ceremony with the assistance of Post members, and former Navy Veterans, Skip Davison and Don Stevenson.

Post 216 provided the firing squad commanded by Rich Chowaniec. Other members of the team included, Joe Salvia, John Moore, Don Stevenson, Skip Davison, Ray Clinard, and Eric Baker. Don Stevenson was the bugler and assisted Skip Davison with the flag folding ceremony.

 

Andrew Sazy

Burial services were held on April 24th for U.S. Army Veteran Andrew Sazy at the Great Lakes National Cemetary in Holly MI. Michigan Army National Guard personnel conducted the ceremony which included the flag folding ceremony and Taps.

Clinton A. Strand

Members of the Legion Honor Guard provided a firing squad for U.S. Army Veteran Clinton Strand at Milford Memorial Cemetery. Michigan Army National Guard (MANG) personnel led by M/SGT Richter and his team conducted the flag presentation ceremony.

Rich Chowniec commanded the firing squad that consisted of Skip Davison, Percy Duncan, Ron Nevorski, Ray Clinard, and Todd Herron. John Moore was the bugler, and Commander Salvia assisted the Honors Team.

Members of the Legion Honor Guard provided a firing squad for WWII Army Veteran Bill Manual at the Ottawa Park Cemetery in Clarkston. Bill was a good friend Skip Davison and his family. Michigan Army National Guard (MANG) personnel from the Military Funeral Honors Team in Detroit conducted Taps, and the flag presentation ceremony.

Skip Davison commanded our firing squad that consisted of Rich Chowaniec, Percy Duncan, John Moore, and John Robinson. Bonne Welbaum carried the U.S. Army Branch Colors.

 

Richard James Slater

Burial services were held on March 26th for U.S. Army Veteran Cpl. Richard James Slater. The services were held held on Sunday March 26, 2006 at the Gramer Funeral Home, on 48271 Van Dyke in Shelby Township,MI.

Michigan Army National Guard personnel consisting of Capt. Linda Jordan, M/Sgt. Richter, SFC Don Campbell and their honors team conducted the ceremony which, included the flag folding ceremony and Taps.

Post 216 provided the firing squad, commanded by Skip Davison. Other members of the team included, Ron Nevorski, Rich Chowaniec, Percy Duncan, Joe Salvia, Don Stevenson, Ray Clinard, and Joe Bishop.

 

Isabel C. Collins

Burial services were held on March 24th for U.S. Army Veteran Isabel Collins at the Church of the Holy Family in Novi, MI. Lt. Collins was in the Nurse Corps during WWII. Michigan Army National Guard personnel consisting of Capt. Linda Jordan, M/Sgt. Richter, SFC Don Campbell and their honors team conducted the ceremony which, included the flag folding ceremony and Taps.

Post 216 provided the firing squad, commanded by Skip Davison. Other members of the team included, Ron Nevorski, Rich Chowaniec, John Moore, Percy Duncan, Ray Clinard, Joe Salvia, Don Stevenson, and Joe Bishop.

 

Charles E. Needham

The Post provided full burial honors for Highland resident and U.S. Navy Veteran Charles E. Needham on March 22nd at the West Highland cemetary.

The Flag folding and presentation was conducted by Skip Davison, Don Stevenson, John Moore and Rich Chowaniec. Taps was played by Murray Burley.

The firing squad was commanded by Rich Chowaniec. Other members of the firing squad included, Percy Duncan, John Moore, Todd Herron, Ray Clinard, and Al Riggs.

 

Edward Davis

Burial services were held on March 16th for U.S. Army Veteran Edward Davis at the Great Lakes National Cemetary in Holly MI. Michigan Army National Guard personnel consisting of Col. Joseph George, Capt. Linda Jordan, and SFC Don Campbell conducted the ceremony which, included the flag folding ceremony and Taps.

Alfred Peischl

Burial services were held on March 16th for U.S. Army Veteran Alfred Peischl at the Great Lakes National Cemetary in Holly MI. Sgt. Major Greg Russo and his team of four Michigan Army National Guard personnel conducted the ceremony which, included the flag folding ceremony and Taps.

Post 216 provided the firing squad, commanded by Rich Chowaniec. Other members of the team included, Joe Salvia, John Moore, Skip Davison, Ray Clinard, and Al Riggs.

 

Vincent Lamia

Former U.S. Army Sgt. Vincent Lamia passed away on January 29, 2006. Sgt. Lamia was a decorated WWII Combat Veteran and an American Legion member for over 30 years. Although he was not a member of this District or Post he was a personal friend of Commander Salvia who coordinated this burial service with the 1st District Commander Richard Chatman. Please see the attached thank you letter from Commander Chatman shown below.

The Post 216 Honor Guard consisted of Joe Salvia, Rich Chowaniec, Skip Davison, Al Riggs, and Ron Nevorski. Our Honor team provided the firing salute, taps, and the flag folding presentation.

 

 

Dennis E. Dougherty

Former U.S. Army Specialist Dennis Daugherty age 67, of Milford and formerly of Williamston, died January 25, 2006. Specialist Daugherty served with the 8th Infantry Division 7th Army during the Viet Nam era. Burial services were held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Milford.

A four member active duty Army team, commanded by MSGT Rector, conducted the flag presentation ceremony and provided taps. Post 216 members provided the firing detail and a color guard as part of the burial service.

The American, Army, POW/MIA, and Legion colors were carried by Nortie Caswell, John Moore, Percy Duncan, and Don Stevenson.

The Firing Detail commanded, by Rich Chowaniec, included Ray Clinard, John Robinson, Ron Nevorski, Lance Oberg, and Todd Herron.

Joe Salvia assisted the Ceremonial Team.

 

Michael Ascencio

U.S. Army Veteran Michael Ascencio age 64 of Saugatuck/Douglas, formerly of Highland, died January 16, 2006, and was interned at Great Lakes National Cemetary. Mr. Ascencio was a Viet Nam Veteran and a member of the Viet Veterans of American (VVA).

The Honor Guard team provided two flag bearers, and a six member rifle detail.
Joe Salvia assisted with the flag presentation. Members participating were Joe Salvia, Rich Chowaniec, Skip Davison, John Moore, Al Riggs, Ray Clinard, Ron Nervorski, Percy Duncan, and Don Stevenson.

 

Thank You Letter from the Ascencio Family

 

Henry J. Valliere

Henry J. Valliere age 78 of Westland, formerly of Hamburg Twp. & Milford, died Saturday, January 14, 2006. Burial was at Milford Memorial Cemetery.

Henry was a WWII Navy Veteran. Active duty Naval personnel conducted the graveside flag folding and Taps ceremonies. Post 216 provided the firing detail and two flag bearers. WWII Navy veterans Murray Burley and Don Stevenson held the National and Navy colors, and Ron Nevorski commanded the firing detail. The firing detail consisted of Joe Salvia, John Moore, Skip Davison, Lance Oberg, and Rich Chowaniec.

The family returned to the Post after the service for a luncheon in the upper hall.

 

Richard Henry "Dick" La Lone

Richard Henry "Dick" La Lone, a sixty year resident of Commerce Twp., died at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac on Tuesday January 10, 2005 after a brief battle with cancer. He was 84 years old. With the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and gave distinguished service in the European Theater. An Army Staff Sergeant whose 5 Battle Stars included one for the Invasion of Normandy, he worked with the French Resistance as a courier before the Liberation of Paris and was awarded the Croix De Guerre by Charles DeGall. He also participated in the liberation of the Mauthausen Concentration near Linz in Austria in May of 1945 Camp and was recognized by several Holocaust survivors groups for his courageous service. In later life, his extensive travels through Europe, where he revisited the site of the Battle of the Bulge and other conflicts gave him a sense of having been a part of history.

Full military honors were conducted on January 13th, in Commerce Michigan. The Military Honor Guard was conducted by a U.S. Army Colonel, and two senior NCO's. The Post Honor Guard included a seven member firing detail, and two flag bearers. The Firing Squad Commander was Rich Chowaniec.

 

Stephan Litt

On January 5th, Post 216 conducted a full burial service for WWII Army Air Corp Veteran Lt. Stephan Litt. The service was held at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. Post Chaplain Archie Noon officiated at the service. Joe Salvia, John Moore and Bonnie Welbaum conducted the flag presentation, and Skip Davison commanded the six member firing detail.

 

Salvatore Vella

On January 3rd, Post 216 provided a firing detail at the burial service of WWII Navy Veteran Salvatore Vella. The service was held at Milford Memorial Cemetery. Ron Nevorski commanded the firing detail.
